Vivienne Riggio

I fabricate large scale mythical creatures that take your imagination to another place and time. I draw from my experience in operatic costuming and incorporate Southwestern animal imagery, embroidery techniques combined with found objects, native wools and traditional handiwork. My desire is that these mystical sculptures encourage a departure from conventional imagery to a place of wonder. My sculptures defy conventional norms, transcend the cultures we think of as ordinary and take our imaginations to a place of our own invention. Ultimately, I hope the viewer connects with that other place, a departure from their day-to-day thinking. For some these pieces take on a lifelike presence while others appreciate the craftsmanship as works of art.
