Artist Statement
I am telling a visual story of Native people’s past and present. I use mostly historical photo references for my work and occasionally do photoshoots for contemporary subjects. I want to tell a different story and move away from the stereotypical. I do a lot of research on the people I paint so that the collector has story behind the subject.
I paint in a contemporary style and use hard edges and some graphic qualities. I want to push the idea of what Native American and Western painting should look like and should be. My hope is that my work is distinguishable and can be seen as separate from my contemporaries. I work to have a contemporary as well as western look to my paintings. I wanted them to have a broad appeal and based on my collectors they do. I continue to push to be innovative in my work and bring a different and fresh look to Native and Western art.
