Jane Schoenfeld

Painting

Colorist Abstractions

Artist Statement

Pastel, immediate and vivid, has been Jane Shoenfeld’s media for 40 years. In Shoenfeld’s work, color’s emotional impact is central. She creates landscapes outdoors and also works abstractly. Organic form and light from the natural world remain throughout. Because Shoenfeld’s imaginative pastel paintings hover between realism and abstraction, there is an element of pareiodolia, the tendency for viewers to impose a specific vision on an ambiguous visual pattern, in her work Shoenfeld is a master of her medium, and also of color and light. And she likes to experiment and trusts the voice of the unconscious, knows she isn’t in charge of it all. But she can decide what stays or goes.
