Evocative Organic Abstraction

Artist Statement

I am a sculptor and installation artist. My artwork is inspired by a love of the natural world, especially the plant life and rock forms of the river and canyon country of the Southwest U.S. Fundamental to the work is a focus on abstract elements of form, structure, pattern, and surface. The materials and construction techniques used also reference the complex human relationship to environment. I am devoted to the communicative power of abstraction, and of the hand-made object. Materials in my art, much of which is collected and harvested from the environment, include wood, willow, and other organic detritus, as well as found objects. Simple, ancient techniques such as assemblage, basketry, joinery, and sewing, evoke the human presence and our history of interaction with environment.
