Thousands of years of Adornment
The LURE and LORE of GEMSTONES
program details . . .
As far back as we know, human beings have adorned themselves with jewelry. Approximately 75,000 years ago, people living near the shores of the southern tip of Africa bore holes into tick shells, strung them together and wore them as jewelry. Today, our favorite gems have fascinating stories to tell! Beyond fashion and historical significance, where do they come from? How can you identify them? And why do we value them? This presentation will also challenge your knowledge of gems!
Barbara will take you back thousands of years to Mesopotamia, Rome and Egypt to view exquisite examples of adornment produced by the artisans of that time. You will be amazed to see that the aesthetic craftsmanship, resources, and technology to produce stunning masterpieces was already in place more than 4,000 years ago. Not to mention designs that today are seen as very contemporary.
SPOILER ALERT: There will be many beautiful images!
