Woodwork

Furniture Design

Artist Statement

I am a self taught woodworker using the centuries old technique of mortise and tenon joinery. I take my inspiration from the Adirondack rustic style of upper New York state. In my one person wood shop here in Santa Fe N.M., I design and build coffee tables, side tables, dining room chairs, and, my speciality, rocking chairs. The wood I use comes from trees that have fallen in wind storms, fruit orchards being pruned or replaced, or from building sites that are being cleared. I have been collecting this wood for years. They include black walnut, apple, cherry, pear and ash. The seat and back of my chairs are woven with either flat reed {inner part of the rattan plant}, shaker tape or rattan cane. The table tops are usually one piece of wood with the edges left natural {live edge]. The pieces are crafted using the natural forms of the wood combined with a functional design, creating a truly one- of- a- kind piece. As one interior designer once told a client “Your kids will be fighting over this piece”. My work has been featured in the New York Times [New Jersey Craft Fair}, Country Living Magazine, Hunterdon County Magazine and various other publications. I have shown my work at the Adirondack Museum Rustic Furniture show, the American Folk Art Museum Store NYC, the Montclair NJ Art museum, the New Jersey State craft fair, , Gallery Ethnica Santa Fe NM, Jen Tough Galleries Santa Fe NM, and the Santa Fe NM studio tours.
