Artist Statement
As a professional photographer and writer, I've traveled the world, inspired by landscapes, nature, and the people I meet. For more than seven decades, I’ve loved making images. I find every day a learning experience and every image an opportunity to liberate traditional perceptions. I enjoy teaching and sharing with others, in the classroom or workshops and have served thirteen times as a National Park Artist-in-Residence.
My photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries across America and have earned numerous awards. I've photographed subjects throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, South America, England, Scotland, Italy, Iceland, Africa and Greece. Before 1997, I was recognized mostly for my large format black and white prints of the American Landscape.
Since 1997, however, I’ve worked in both black and white and color with digital cameras. Projects have included PILGRIM EYE, a revealing book about my journey of self-discovery through photography, PRAIRIE LANDSMEN, a documentary study of the Jews of Oklahoma–undertaken in cooperation with the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and BY A CLEARER LIGHT, an exhibition of my National Park photographs that traveled for five years throughout the contiguous States under the auspices of ExhibitsUSA, a division of the Mid-America Arts Alliance.
My architectural photographs illustrated the 1980 book, TULSA ART DECO, re-published in December 2001, by the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture. THE ESSENCE OF PLACE, my most recent major exhibition hung at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, from November, 2016, through March, 2018. In 2004 I, was inducted into the Tulsa Historical Society’s Hall of Fame, and more than 800 of my photographs were recently accepted into the archives of the National Park Service.
